Program Overview

  • Spend either the fall or spring semester at ASU
  • Complete at least six credits from a curated list of challenging courses focused on classic works of literature, philosophy, politics, and economics
  • Share written reflections on at least four SCETL events or activities
  • Earn SCETL’s signature Civic Awareness Award as well as Civic Leaders certification from the University of Mary

Eligibility

The fellowship is open to all University of Mary undergraduates, but students studying business administration, philosophy, politics, or economics are especially encouraged to apply. Prospective Civic Leaders Fellows must apply to and be accepted at Mary College at ASU and obtain approval from their academic advisor.

Available SCETL Courses

Civic Leaders Fellowship students may choose from a variety of designated SCETL courses to fulfill the requirements of their major or minor major or minor requirements.

Note: Many SCETL courses can be used to fulfill multiple requirements; students will need to work with their advisors to determine how best to use these courses.

Students in other degree programs should consult with their academic advisor regarding their desire to study as a Civic Leaders Fellow.

Funded by the Arizona Legislature and formed in 2017, the at Arizona State University debates the large questions that loom over society and shape our conception of the common good. SCETL engages these questions through Socratic dialogue, studying the great figures of Western literature and philosophy from throughout history as well as the American founders and leaders who have shaped our particular nation and culture.

In 2012, the University of Mary partnered with Arizona State University to create Mary College at ASU, a domestic exchange program enabling our students to take advantage of the opportunities and resources of the nation’s largest public research university. ASU offers world-class faculty, facilities, and resources; a vast course catalog; and diverse perspectives both within and outside the classroom. This additional breadth of experience is invaluable, especially for students interested in civic life and public service.
